Duchy Sport makes its international debut at Monaco Yacht Show 2023

Cockwells will show the Duchy Sport outside the UK for the first time at the Monaco Yacht Show, 27 to 30 September 2023, now with a galley below and a double-berth cabin.

A year after its first public outing at Southampton, the Duchy Sport is going to Monaco. Cockwells will have the boat at QJ5 in the Tender Show section of the Monaco Yacht Show, which runs from 27 to 30 September, and it is the first time the model has been shown outside Britain. I covered the original launch at the time; this is the same model with a year of refinement behind it, and the changes are worth going through because they alter what the boat is for.

What has changed below deck

The headline change is a galley in the cabin, which the first boat did not have, and a hatch inside the cabin which opens up to form a double bed. Together they turn a day boat into something you can eat and sleep aboard. The forward cabin has heads and a shower with hot water, and it is air-conditioned, so there is a cool space to retreat to after a few hours in the sun.

As well as having a blast on the water, you can now dine and dream on the Duchy Sport.

Henry Ward, Design Director, Cockwells

A wake-sports boat first

The Duchy Sport was designed around towed sports. The hull throws a wave you can surf, there are several tow points for boards and inflatables, and the deck is laid out so the people who are not in the water are looked after:

  • Sunbeds, with lounging space on the foredeck and the aft deck; the aft area opens up into one large space
  • A Bimini for shade, with removable awnings that enclose more of the cockpit when needed
  • Backrests that adjust to face the dining table, or to face aft and watch whoever is behind the boat
  • Steps down to the bathing platform, which has a large swim ladder
  • Deep side decks and high rails, so children and less sure-footed guests can move about safely
  • Stowage sized for water toys

The layout is customised to each owner, so the balance between lounging, dining and toy stowage is the client’s call. For a walk-through of the first boat, Aquaholic’s review of the Duchy Sport is worth watching.

As a chase boat for a larger yacht

Cockwells is pitching the Monaco crowd on the Duchy Sport as a chase boat as well as a day boat. The seakeeping is there, and the hull can be fitted with heavy-duty towing eyes so it travels behind the mothership instead of being lifted aboard.

Unlike many other such tenders on the market, the stern drives can be lifted into trailer mode to reduce drag and prevent damage, too.

Dave Cockwell, Founder and Managing Director, Cockwells

The Cockwells team in Monaco will also be talking about the tender sets recently delivered to the superyachts Renaissance and Blue, and four more tenders now on order at the yard.

A film role next year

One line of trivia for the record: the Duchy Sport is set to appear in Back in Action, a Netflix feature with Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz that is expected in 2024. It will not change how the boat drives, but it will not hurt its profile either.

The Duchy Sport in Australia and New Zealand

The brief the Duchy Sport answers, tow the kids on a board in the morning, anchor for lunch, shower off and head home with a cabin to duck into, is how boats get used on Sydney Harbour and Pittwater every summer weekend. Davis Marine Brokerage is the exclusive Australian and New Zealand dealer for Duchy Motor Launches, and a Duchy Sport ordered through us is imported, delivered and commissioned in Sydney with the layout specified to the owner. The first Duchy 35 for Australia arrived in Sydney earlier this year, so the import process is one we have been through. Talk to us about a specification, or about finance, and we will take it from there.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Duchy Sport?

The Duchy Sport is a Cockwells-built day boat and sports tender designed around wakesurfing, wakeboarding and hydrofoiling, with a hull that produces a surfable wake and multiple towing points. It also has sunbeds, a Bimini, a bathing platform, and a cabin forward with heads and a hot shower plus, in the latest version, a galley and a double berth.

Can you sleep aboard the Duchy Sport?

Yes, on the latest version. Cockwells has added a hatch inside the forward cabin that opens to create a double bed, alongside the new galley. The cabin has air conditioning, heads and a hot shower, so an overnight stop at anchor is realistic rather than a compromise.

Is the Duchy Sport suitable as a superyacht chase boat?

Cockwells says so, and the Monaco showing is aimed at that market. The boat can be fitted with heavy-duty towing eyes so it is towed behind the mothership rather than stowed on deck, and its stern drives lift into trailer mode under tow to cut drag and protect the drives.

Yacht vs sailboat: what is the actual difference?

A sailboat is defined by how it is propelled — by sail. A yacht is defined by size and purpose — a recreational vessel, generally over about 10 metres, built for leisure rather than work. The categories overlap: a large sailing vessel is both. A 12m motor cruiser is a yacht but not a sailboat.…
