Duchy Sport concept: a Cockwells boat built for wakesurfing

Cockwells will reveal the Duchy Sport, a wakesurfing and family day boat concept for up to nine, at Southampton International Boat Show, 10 to 19 September 2021; hull number one is already sold.

A Duchy built for wakesurfing is not something I expected to be writing about. Yet that is the news from Cornwall this week: Cockwells will pull the covers off a concept it is calling the Duchy Sport when the Southampton International Boat Show opens at Mayflower Park on Friday 10 September. The show runs until the 19th, and Cockwells is on berths M101 to M103.

Duchy Motor Launches have built their reputation on the look of the gentleman’s launch and on their behaviour in a seaway, and the range now spans roughly 6.4 to 18.3 metres (21 to 60 feet). Each is a semi-production boat finished to the owner’s specification. The Sport shares the family name and the standard of finish but, by Cockwells’ own account, is a departure from the rest of the line.

The brief: the best wakesurfing boat around

Henry Ward, Cockwells’ Design Director, says the project began with a single instruction – build the best boat going for wake surfing – and grew from there into a day boat for a party of up to nine. The intent is a hull that throws a clean, surfable wave behind it and still looks after the people who would rather lie in the sun than ride it.

If you are looking for the ultimate family fun boat that is perfect for active watersports enthusiasts, relaxed sunbathers and everyone in between, then the Duchy Sport is for you.

Henry Ward, Design Director, Cockwells

What the concept includes

  • A large bimini for shade, with removable awnings and clear plexiglass panels that close it in when the weather turns
  • Adjustable sunbeds aft that double as seating around the dining table, or as a raised perch to watch the action behind the boat
  • A wet bar
  • A forward cabin fitted with a day heads
  • Steps down aft to a swim platform and a big swim ladder
  • Stowage planned around water toys

Hull number one is already sold and is under construction at the yard’s Mylor Creek boatyard, so this is a concept with a customer rather than a rendering in search of one.

Also on the Cockwells berths: Duchy 27, Duchy 35 and a new Hardy line-up

Alongside the concept, visitors can step aboard a Duchy 27 and a Duchy 35, the two Duchys most buyers know, and the Hardy 42 Hybrid. The Hardy is the secondary story of the week and worth a paragraph. It is the 31st Hardy 42 built but the first finished by Cockwells, the first Hardy launched in Cornish waters, and the first in the Andrew Wolstenholme-designed range to carry hybrid propulsion. Digital switching runs the boat’s systems from 16-inch Raymarine screens at the flybridge helm as well as in the wheelhouse. Motor Boat & Yachting has called the 42 ‘the serious cruiser’s choice’, and it keeps its sea manners above 25 knots.

Cockwells is also releasing specifications at the show for the Hardy 45 and Hardy 53, developed with Wolstenholme, and says the wider line-up now takes in the 65DS, 50DS, 40DS, 36AD and 32. If a Hardy is more your size of boat, the Hardy Motor Yachts page has the range.

What the Duchy Sport means for buyers in Australia and New Zealand

A wakesurf boat with a Cockwells finish is a fair match for how Sydney people use the water: a morning of towing, then lunch at anchor with nine aboard and shade overhead. Davis Marine Brokerage is the exclusive Australian and New Zealand dealer for Duchy Motor Launches, so the Duchy Sport can be specified and ordered through us for delivery to Sydney, with the import, delivery and commissioning handled here. The same applies to the Duchy 27 and Duchy 35 on show this week. We are at Fergusons Marina, The Spit, Mosman; call 0408 864 111 or send an enquiry. For the background on why these boats are built the way they are, start with the Duchy difference.

Cockwells’ show announcement is on the builder’s website.

Yacht vs sailboat: what is the actual difference?

A sailboat is defined by how it is propelled — by sail. A yacht is defined by size and purpose — a recreational vessel, generally over about 10 metres, built for leisure rather than work. The categories overlap: a large sailing vessel is both. A 12m motor cruiser is a yacht but not a sailboat.…
