Pittwater Boat Anchoring Locations
America Bay and Refuge Bay
America Bay and Refuge Bay are stunning inlets within Pittwater. They offer impressive rock formations, sandy beaches, and protected anchorage. Refuge Bay features a beautiful waterfall with a cave behind it and a sheltered sandy beach. America Bay is quieter, with a rocky beach, a creek, and another waterfall. Both bays can get busy, especially in summer, but there is usually ample space to anchor near the entrance. They provide excellent shelter for overnight stays, except during strong north-westerly conditions.
The Basin
The Basin is a calm and protected lagoon-like bay, perfect for swimming, fishing, and stand-up paddle-boarding. This deepwater anchorage is protected from the majority of winds, making it an excellent choice to anchor during strong southerly winds. However, it is exposed to the north-east and south-east, which means it is not suitable to anchor or moor during strong easterly winds.
Flint And Steel Beach
Flint and Steel Beach is a stunning and pristine beach situated as the first beach around West Head on the southern side of Cowan Waters. It stretches for nearly one kilometre, with rock platforms and a freshwater creek along its borders. It’s the perfect spot to visit, especially when the winds are blowing from the south because it’s sheltered by West Head. However, keep in mind that near the entrance of Broken Bay, there can be some rocky areas and swells, so it’s not recommended for overnight stays. The beach is influenced by tides, but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of space to drop anchor on the sandy and muddy bottom.
White Horse Beach
White Horse Beach is a small sandy stretch located between Flint and Steel Beach and Hungry Beach. It offers beautiful north-westerly views of the Hawkesbury River towards Brooklyn. Like Flint and Steel Beach, it is affected by Tasman Sea swell, making it a great spot for a picnic and a swim rather than an overnight stay. It is the beach located southwest before reaching Hungry Beach.
Resolute Beach
Located in the Western foreshores of the head section of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Resolute Beach faces Pittwater and is opposite Barrenjoey Headland. Resolute Beach, with its sheltered position, seclusion, stunning views of Palm Beach and Barrenjoey Headland, beautiful emerald green water, and wide sandy beach, is among the finest destinations in Pittwater. It’s an excellent spot for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking due to its rock-free 60-metre sandy stretch and minimal or no waves. However, it is advisable to visit during the day as overnight anchoring is not safe.
