Duchy 35 heads to Monaco with Mediterranean and flybridge versions

Cockwells will show Mediterranean, flybridge and Scandinavian versions of the award-winning Duchy 35 on Stand QJ23 at the Monaco Yacht Show from 25 to 28 September 2019.

The Monaco Yacht Show is better known for yachts measured in tens of metres than for launches, which makes Cockwells’ plan for this year’s show an interesting one. Between 25 and 28 September the Cornish builder will be on Stand QJ23 offering the Duchy 35 in three distinct specifications: a Mediterranean version with a white hull, a flybridge version, and a Scandinavian layout set up for mooring bow-to. The 35 is the boat that won Wheelhouse and Cockpit Cruisers at Motor Boat & Yachting’s 2018 Motor Boat of the Year Awards, so it arrives on the Riviera with its reputation already made.

Every Duchy Motor Launch follows the same recipe: a classic look, a hand-finished build, a composite hull that asks little in the way of upkeep, and an options list long enough that the boat ends up as individual as its owner. On the 35 that list already runs from a teak deck and leather upholstery to crockery and glasses made for their own stowage; it is a large part of what we describe as the Duchy difference. The three Monaco versions apply the same thinking to a climate and a style of boating.

Three ways to specify a Duchy 35

Mediterranean

This is the version Cockwells is leading with, and the one that will mean the most to an Australian reader. The hull is white. The boat is laid out for up to ten guests for a day on the water, or as a weekend boat for two, with the owner choosing between one and two cabins below. On deck there are sunbeds forward and aft, a Bimini for shade, a bathing platform designed so that getting into the water is easy, and a swim ladder to get back aboard. Inside, the saloon is air-conditioned. Cockwells is clear that the specification is built around warm weather, and that the options can be tuned further to the owner’s own climate.

Flybridge

The flybridge version adds a second deck level with seating for three people that converts to sunbeds, a Bimini that folds away, a table stowed beneath the helm console that slides out when needed, and somewhere to carry a tender. For an owner who wants to run the boat from up top on a fine day and still have the sheltered wheelhouse below, it is the obvious choice.

Scandinavian

The third layout is about how the boat is moored rather than how it is lounged on. Cruising the Scandinavian coast means going bow-to a rock or a short jetty, so the specification adds an anchor windlass at the stern, a pulpit with an opening gate, and a passarelle or ladder over the bow. Cockwells’ pitch is that these additions build on handling and seakeeping that are already strong points of the hull.

Bespoke results without the bespoke process

What ties the three together is the Cockwells argument that a semi-production boat can be tailored to the point where it feels like a one-off, without the cost that a true custom build involves. Dave Cockwell, the company’s founder and managing director, puts it this way:

Offering all the benefits of a bespoke build without the high-end price tag, we can customise your Duchy 35 so that it chimes precisely with you, your climate and your way of life. We look forward to welcoming you to Stand QJ23 at the Monaco Yacht Show to discuss your requirements and explore the possibilities.

From the Riviera to Sydney Harbour

Read the Mediterranean specification again with Sydney in mind: a white hull that stays cooler under a hard sun, sunbeds, shade, an air-conditioned saloon, a platform you can step off for a swim and a ladder to get back on. That is a Pittwater summer, or a Saturday off Store Beach, described by a Cornish yard. It is the Duchy 35 specification I would expect most Australian and New Zealand buyers to start from, and it is the one I will be asking the yard about first.

Davis Marine Brokerage is the exclusive Australian and New Zealand dealer for Duchy Motor Launches, Hardy Motor Yachts and Cockwells SuperYacht Tenders, so if Monaco is not on your calendar this month, the same conversation about layouts and options can happen here. A Duchy 35 can be ordered through us in whichever of these specifications suits; we import the boat, and handle delivery and commissioning in Sydney from Fergusons Marina, The Spit, in Mosman. Get in touch or call Sam Davis on 0408 864 111, and if you are weighing up how to fund a new build, our boat finance page is a good place to start. The yard’s own announcement is on the Cockwells website.

Frequently asked questions

Which Duchy 35 versions is Cockwells showing at Monaco 2019?

Three. A Mediterranean version with a white hull, sunbeds fore and aft, an air-conditioned saloon, a Bimini, an easy-access bathing platform and a swim ladder; a flybridge version with convertible seating for three, folding Bimini, slide-out table and tender stowage; and a Scandinavian layout with an aft windlass, gated pulpit and bow passarelle or ladder.

When and where is the Monaco Yacht Show 2019?

The Monaco Yacht Show runs from 25 September to 28 September 2019. Cockwells will be on Stand QJ23, where the company will discuss the three Duchy 35 designs, Mediterranean, flybridge and Scandinavian, and take prospective owners through the options available on the launch.

How many people can the Duchy 35 Mediterranean carry?

Cockwells describes the Mediterranean version as accommodating up to ten guests for a day on the water, or two people for a weekend aboard, with the owner choosing between one- and two-cabin layouts below decks. The boat is specified for warm climates, with shade, air-conditioning and easy access to the water.

Can I order a Duchy 35 Mediterranean in Australia?

Yes. Davis Marine Brokerage is the exclusive Australian and New Zealand dealer for Duchy Motor Launches. A Duchy 35 can be ordered through us in the Mediterranean, flybridge or Scandinavian specification, and we handle the import, delivery and commissioning in Sydney from Fergusons Marina, The Spit, Mosman. Has the Duchy 35 won any awards?

Yes. The Duchy 35 was named Wheelhouse and Cockpit Cruisers winner at Motor Boat & Yachting magazine’s 2018 Motor Boat of the Year Awards. The three designs being offered at Monaco are variations on that award-winning boat, built on the same hull and finished to the same hand-built standard.

Yacht vs sailboat: what is the actual difference?

A sailboat is defined by how it is propelled — by sail. A yacht is defined by size and purpose — a recreational vessel, generally over about 10 metres, built for leisure rather than work. The categories overlap: a large sailing vessel is both. A 12m motor cruiser is a yacht but not a sailboat.…
