Duchy 35 gains a twin-cabin layout ahead of Southampton Boat Show

Cockwells has announced a twin-cabin layout for its award-winning Duchy 35, giving the launch two double cabins, and will show it on Stand M101 in the marina at this year’s Southampton Boat Show.

Ask most couples what would turn a weekend boat into a family boat and the answer is a second cabin. Cockwells has now built one into the Duchy 35. The Cornish yard’s latest customisation of its award-winning launch, winner of the Wheelhouse and Cockpit Cruisers class at Motor Boat & Yachting’s 2018 Motor Boat of the Year Awards, puts two double cabins below the saloon, and the boat will be on Stand M101 in the marina at this year’s Southampton Boat Show.

Every Duchy Motor Launch comes out of the same place and the same process: built by hand at the yard in Cornwall, in composites chosen to keep maintenance down, to a classic design that is then tailored with whatever the owner wants, from a teak deck and leather seating to glassware in made-to-measure stowage. What has changed with this boat is the scale of the tailoring. The options used to be about finish and equipment; now they reach into the layout of the boat and how it is used.

What the twin-cabin layout gives you

The accommodation plan is the news. Below decks there are now two double berths. The galley moves up into the saloon, which on a boat of this type is where people gather anyway, and the shower compartment has the headroom to be used standing up. Over the saloon an electric sunroof opens the full width of the coachroof, and the windows run right round, so the view is as good from the dinette as from the helm. Owners pick their own timber for the joinery, their own electronics and leather, and can add a gyro stabiliser for comfort.

The Duchy 35 is for cruising and relaxing, and offers unrivalled seakeeping with style.

Two boats just out of the shed

The announcement also covers two boats recently launched from the yard at Mylor Creek, and both are worth a look for what they say about where the range is heading.

  • A Duchy 35 in the customary navy blue, but with teak cladding and a walnut interior, and a single touchscreen that controls every system on board. It is the yard’s showcase for its joinery as much as it is a boat.
  • The newest Duchy 27, in an aqua blue hull, with design changes that give it more fuel and water capacity, better weight distribution and improved sound-proofing.

Three more ideas on the drawing board

Beyond the boats already afloat, Cockwells has sketched three further takes on the 35 for different cruising grounds:

  • A Mediterranean version with a white hull, a pair of sunbeds (forward or aft), air-conditioning in the saloon, an electric Bimini, a bathing platform designed for easy access and a swim ladder.
  • A flybridge option: seating for three up top that converts to sunbeds, a folding Bimini, a table stowed under the helm console that slides out, and storage for a tender.
  • A Scandinavian specification, with a windlass aft for mooring bow-to, a gated pulpit and a passarelle or ladder at the bow, building on the hull’s existing manoeuvrability.

The thread running through all of it, the twin-cabin boat included, is that the buyer is specifying the boat rather than choosing from a catalogue. Dave Cockwell’s own summary of the approach:

The flexibility of Cockwells’ Duchy Motor Launches drive the popularity of this well-established brand, offering all the benefits of a custom-build without the high-end price tag.

Southampton, and the view from Mosman

Dave Cockwell’s invitation is to come and see the boat on Stand M101 at Southampton. Few readers of this page will, so here is the local position. Davis Marine Brokerage is the exclusive Australian and New Zealand dealer for Duchy Motor Launches, Hardy Motor Yachts and Cockwells SuperYacht Tenders, based at Fergusons Marina, The Spit, in Mosman. The twin-cabin layout, and the Mediterranean concept in particular, map neatly onto how a boat this size gets used on Sydney Harbour, the Hawkesbury and the Gold Coast waterways. A new Duchy 35 in any of these layouts can be ordered through us for delivery to Sydney; we import the boat and handle commissioning here.

The Duchy difference page covers why we chose the range, and the smaller Duchy 21 and larger Duchy 45 round out the series if a 35 is not the right size. To talk about a build, contact us or call Sam Davis on 0408 864 111; if you would be trading up from a current boat, we can sell it for you as part of the process. Cockwells’ full announcement is on the Cockwells website.

Frequently asked questions

What is new on the Duchy 35?

Cockwells has introduced a twin-cabin layout with two double berths below, the galley in the saloon, a shower compartment with generous headroom, and an electric sunroof across the full width of the roof. Owners choose the joinery timber, electronics and leather, and can add a gyro stabiliser. The boat will be shown at the 2019 Southampton Boat Show on Stand M101 in the marina.

What has changed on the latest Duchy 27?

The most recent Duchy 27 to leave Cockwells’ Mylor Creek yard has an aqua-blue hull; it also incorporates design changes that increase fuel and water storage, improve weight distribution and add sound-proofing. The Duchy 27 sits between the Duchy 21 and the Duchy 35 in a range that also includes the Duchy 45.

What are the Mediterranean, flybridge and Scandinavian Duchy 35 concepts?

Three adaptations Cockwells has sketched for other cruising grounds. The Mediterranean boat has a white hull, sunbeds, a saloon with air-conditioning, an electric Bimini, bathing platform and swim ladder. The flybridge adds upper seating that converts to sunbeds, a folding Bimini, a slide-out table and tender storage. The Scandinavian version adds an aft windlass, gated pulpit and bow passarelle or ladder.

Yacht vs sailboat: what is the actual difference?

A sailboat is defined by how it is propelled — by sail. A yacht is defined by size and purpose — a recreational vessel, generally over about 10 metres, built for leisure rather than work. The categories overlap: a large sailing vessel is both. A 12m motor cruiser is a yacht but not a sailboat.…
